Time for some GoT season 8 speculation :p. At least we now know the ‘Last Battle’ with the armies of the dead will be at Winterfell, aptly named like Hodor, which again shows GRRM knew what he was doing when he started publishing the whole shebang 27 years ago.
As to my speculative bona fides (and some of you may remember this 😉 ) … After book 5’s release in 2011 (and then when Jon Snow’s stabbing was filmed in season 5 (2015)), I predicted he’d be back, unlike Ned and Robb before him, which would be GRRM’s signal that Act 3 was underway …
So, without further ado, how might GoT end?

Harrowing thriller sporting superior writing, acting and direction; has been compared favorably with Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-nominated Mystic River (2003). I beg to differ; it’s better. Mashes a police procedural and a complex drama exploring the impact on two families when their two girls go missing – how far would you go to find them? Do the ends justify the means? Excellent career-high performances from Hugh Jackman (as one of the fathers) and Jake Gyllenhaal (the detective). Would be surprised if it’s not up there in awards season.

So Joss Whedon’s new show was disappointingly underwhelming – much weaker pilot than his previous series, it feels like he’s dialing it in (if even creatively involved at all). The story was all over the place and didn’t make sense, but most egregious, the characters were one dimensional and non-descript – what happened to the Scooby Gang, the dialog, the repartee? It also felt like you had to be deeply into the written comics – e.g. what’s so special or important about Agent Coulson, anyway – wasn’t he just a redshirt who Whedon killed off in one of the movies? And who cares about all this coy mention of Melinda May and other Marvel characters no one’s ever heard of? Meh … At least it was better than most recent superhero shows (e.g. Arrow, The Cape), but that’s not saying much. Perhaps it’ll get better from here? …

I know we’re 2 years behind, but we finally watched all 90-100 hours of LOST and I can now offer up this ‘grand unified theory’ to explain the 6-season story. (It’s high-concept modern myth-making; the only other recent show to have done this well is BSG.)
Synopsis: 2,000 years ago, Jacob unwittingly unleashes the Devil (‘Smokey’) upon the Island, which is the physical manifestation of Hell on earth. While Smokey seeks to escape the Island and wreak havoc upon the world, Jacob’s plan is to bring a series of ‘half-damned souls’ to the Island in the hope that they can redeem themselves and each other to somehow defeat Smokey. Even though Smokey finds a way to murder Jacob, his final set of ‘candidates’ – the survivors of Oceanic flight 815 – eventually discover their purpose and succeed at their task at great self-sacrificial cost, and are rewarded by reuniting as eternal friends in the after-life

Steven Spielberg’s latest TV show is a big-budget cross between Jurassic Park (dinosaurs and action adventure), Lost (wilderness survival, mysteries, long story arc) and a typical family drama (pick any, like Brothers & Sisters). It mostly delivers as a family action adventure show, and is quite watchable, but falls short of greatness. When watching, I’ve mostly been thinking, “gee, they should adapt Julian May’s Saga of Pliocene Exile, that would make a brilliant TV or film series.”

Welcome to WetWareGames, and pleased to make your acquaintance! This a personal blog for sharing thoughts and discussions on hopefully interesting topics with friends and colleagues – and perhaps make some new friends along the way. According to Wikipedia, the fount of all human understanding, “wetware” refers to
both the physical brain and the human mind. So the name “WetWareGames” covers a breadth of subjects on which I might write:
- Games, especially unplugged, acoustic or analog games (aka boardgames, cardgames or tabletop games) – since these are games that can be played with just your wetware
- Passive Media (books, film, TV) – as the most intelligent media can set off a around of mental gymnastics (wetware games)
- Tech Disruptions – while tech is about software and hardware, in the end it’s wetware that drives the biggest innovations
- Social Commentary – as not everything is a game
- Cognitive Development – with a young family, it’s fascinating to watch a child’s wetware develop, and for them, learning is play!
